Looking for a trip with a difference? Arkhyz offers superb heli-skiing from mid-December onwards.
First, a little geography – Arkhyz is a village on the isthmus between the Black and Caspian Seas. The impact of these seas on the local climate could not be more felicitous for skiers, as it produces excellent powder snow in huge quantities!
5564-m high Mount Elbrus, the highest summit in Russia, is barely 100 km away.
As you will have guessed, the landscape is extremely alpine and boasts an endless variety of skiable terrain, with long descents on glaciers, in steep couloirs or through wooded valleys.
It’s impossible to get bored!
But this trip is also a journey into history as, at the end of a great day’s skiing, we head back to our accommodation in the Dacha Gorbachev. Once the summer home of former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, this is where Helmut Kohl negotiated the reunification of Germany in 1990.
